To consumers, though, 802.11ax will be known as Wi-Fi 6. The Alliance is also retroactively numbering the more recent versions of the Wi-Fi protocol – 802.11ac will be known as Wi-Fi 5, and 802.11n will be called Wi-Fi 4. I actually like this, just like we renamed several cellular protocol alphabet soups to "2G" (edge)/"3G"/"4G"/"5G". I think I'd prefer a one letter suffix instead of a "Wi-Fi" prefix though, or at least something single syllable.
